What are the causes of color distortion in printing?

Published by Jaker Chen April 09,2022

We know that the most intuitive factor for the attractiveness of packaging boxes to customers is color clarity and design style. Here we discuss the problem of color distortion, which is why different factories make the same style box quality.

1. The color is distorted during the restoration process.
Most of the colors used in today's printing factories are CMYK. However, if the inks of the four colors C, M, Y, and K are not pure enough, the displayed colors have strong and weak differences, causing distortion.

2. The process of RGB conversion to CMYK loses information and is distorted.
Before determining the corresponding value of CMYK, the digital acquisition machine will convert the collected R, G, and B information into the corresponding values of C, M, Y, and K. This process will cause serious distortion without a new color management system.
Suggested method: According to the actual ink, paper material, temperature and humidity, correct adjustment of RGB and CMYK values can avoid partial distortion.

3. The sample picture itself has color distortion
In many cases, printing factories print based on the pictures given by customers. If the colors of the pictures and the original items are different, the printed colors will be distorted.
Suggested method: When shooting the original reference item, ask a professional photographer to take pictures to avoid color distortion due to unprofessional errors.

4. The picture loses color and is distorted during scanning.
When the pictures given by the customer are collected at the factory using an image scanning instrument, the pixels need to be divided into discrete, and then the R, G, B of the pixels are collected one by one.
There are too many pixels in the picture itself, and the scanning instrument cannot collect the pixels 100% completely, resulting in the loss of picture information. Eventually, the pattern of missing pixels is printed, resulting in partial color distortion.

Excellent printing suppliers will reduce the controllable color distortion factors to the minimum, and inform the customers of uncontrollable color distortion factors to avoid stagnation of cooperation.
